As 1944 draws to a close, the U.S. fleet of Corsair fighter planes rules the skies over the Pacific, and Japanese pilot Hiroyuki Hamada has come to realize that defeat is inevitable. When the Imperial Navy decides to start using kamikaze pilots with its operation "Divine Wind", lieutenant Hamada is torn between his patriotic duty and his sense of free will. He must make the difficult decision to leave his wife and his daughter Riko behind to take command of a suicide mission.
